Local Distribution

Lately, to research distribution and processing in the CNY area, we visited some places right here in Syracuse to find out where food comes from. Liehs and Steigerwald is a local meat market over on Grant blvd that has been in the same location since 1936. We had the chance to talk to the owner and get his insight on todays meat processign and distribution practices. In a nutshell, he said his state inspected business is not the typical model and most of his customers are loyal 2nd and 3rd gen. family and friends. Most of his pork comes from Canada and beef come from all over the nation. The meat is then distributed from G+C and Gianelli Sausage. This week he was preparing hand made corned beef for Saint Particks Day. Joe and I also stopped in Graby's market on the corner of Euclid and Wescott. The owner wasn't there, but we did get some good conversation from the gentleman behind the counter. He summed up that their products come from all over the USA. Actually he couldn't specifically tell us where it all came from, and he didn't know how to go about finding out. He did mention that a few times the stores employees have suggested stocking fresh foods over the years, but the owner wasn't interested. Ok, more to come
